Startup Dos Owls suggest mini projectors can be more than just, well, projectors-- its ODIN mini projector features Android as OS, allowing use as a standalone portable computing device.
The ODIN carries a 1.6GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU, 2GB RAM and Android 4.4 (KitKat) inside a package measuring all of 11 x 15 x 4.5cm. Connectivity comes via wifi (b/g/n) and Bluetooth 4.0, allowing users to either connect to the internet, sync with smartphones or push audio to external speakers.
It also features an HDMI port, two USB ports, headphone plug and a 12V power adapter. The internal rechargeable battery provides juice for up to 2 hours of viewing in portable mode or 1 hour 15 minutes in full power mode.
Taking care of the "projector" part of the device is a 0.3-inch DMD (Direct Micromirror Display) with an LED light source able to beam images of up to 250-inch at WVGA (854 x 480) resolution with 1000:1 contrast ratio and 60Hz refresh rate.
According to Dos Owls Android allows not only streaming from apps such as Netflix and Hulu, but also access to files from the likes of Dropbox and Skydrive for use as a "fully functioning" computer with the inclusion of peripherals.
The ODIN projector is currently on the Kickstarter preorder/crowdfunding platform, where Dos Owls hopes to reach a goal of $250000 in around 30 days. Should the campaign be successful the projector ships from December 2014.
