Vizio TVs Get Dolby Vision

  • PDF

Dolby Laboratories teams up with Vizio to bring Dolby Vision technology to the consumer market-- specifically through the Vizio Reference Series 65- and 12-inch UHD Full-Array LED Smart TVs.

Vizio Dolby VisionDolby Vision covers multiple technologies used by TVs, from media mastering and playback to the actual displays. Thus it expands colour palettes, enhances dynamic range and increases contrast ratios by taking control of individual pixels within the displays. Or so Dolby claims, at any rate.

However, one has to keep in mind very little content actually takes advantage of the technology-- so far only Warner Bros. offers compatible releases and movies (including Edge of Tomorrow, Into the Storm, The Lego Movie, Man of Steel, Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) via the VUDU streaming service.

As for the actual TVs, the Reference Series was first seen back at CES 2014. It features a full-array 384-zone local dimming backlight with a maximum 800 nits brightness, 240Hz effective refresh rate, built-in 802.11ac dual-band wifi and integrated 5.1 channel surround sound (in the 65-inch model).

Powering such imagery is the VM50 processing engine complete with "Ultra-Colour Spectrum" to widen the colour gamut beyond the Rec 709 standard.

No word is available regarding when the Reference Series TVs will ship, at least so far.
