Samsung Opens Bixby to 3rd Parties

The 2018 Samsung Developer Conference sees the S. Korean giant announce the Bixby Developer Centre-- a set of tools allowing 3rd party developer to build services compatible with the voice-controlled smart assistant.

Bixby Developer CentreSamsung calls such additions "Bixby Capsules." Essentially the equivalent of Alexa Skills or Google Assistant Actions, they bring more features to the Bixby AI, as well as the potential to control more smart home devices like the other currently available AI assistants. Such "Bixby experiences" will be available through an appropriate marketplace providing users with a range of custom Bixby interactions.

Alexa, Now in Italiano and Español

Amazon follows on the June 2018 announcement of support for the Spanish and Italian languages by bringing Alexa and Echo devices-- namely the Echo, Echo Plus, Echo Dot, Echo Spot and Echo Sub-- to Spain and Italy.

Alexa Italian SpanishThe devices come to the two European countries as the company launches the updated version of Alexa Voice Service (AVS) able to handle the languages. As well as language support, Italian- and Spanish-language Alexa includes culture-specific updates, with partnerships with local brands providing local news article suggestions and even regional recipes.

The update should also rollout to 3rd party Alexa devices. An Amazon blogpost details the extent of such products coming to Italy and Spain via Sonos, Bose, Harman Kardon, Jabra, Netgear, Huawei, Sony, Grundig and Energy Sistem, among others.

Google-owned Nest brings the Thermostat E to Europe-- a lower-cost smart thermostat tweaked for European heating systems complete with installation simple enough to not require a boiler engineer.

Nest Thermostat EFirst released in the US around a year ago, the Thermostat E consists of 2 parts. The first component is a stand-mounted thermostat featuring the familiar Nest dial interface, while the second is a round boiler controller dubbed the Heat Link E. The thermostat has a large frosted showing current and target temperatures, and wirelessly communicates with the Heat Link E. Actual control involves either twisting the outer dial, companion iOS/Android app or voice control through Google Home.
