ISE Ranked 3rd Fastest-Growing Trade Show in World

EXPO magazine now ranks ISE as the 3rd fastest-growing trade show in the world (up from 9th position last year).

The annual ISE Press Event (held this week) always offers a statistical re-cap: after 2012, ISE shows a track record that most athletic departments would blame on steroids.

Attendance (up 17.2% in 2012 to 40,869) is outpacing the growth in exhibition space (825 exhibitors occupied 11 halls).

Now ISE 2013 will expand its exhibition space to take up the last remaining Hall at the RAI, adding Hall 8 (oddly enough the first hall ISE ever used at the RAI.)

On the eve of the 10th event, Mike Blackman, MD, Integrated Systems Events, says “We knew from our very first show that we had a winner but no one imagined the rate of success.”

UK and Germany each brought more than 5000 attendees to ISE 2012. Almost every European country (and UAE) sent more attendees to 2012 (except Portugal and Greece who are getting so much bad economic press we probably shouldn’t add any more.)

AMX Celebrates 30th Anniversary

In our tech industry we always look forward but sometimes it’s fun to look back. For example, AMX now celebrates its 30th year in business.

In 1982, salesman Scott Miller was convinced people would gladly give up being tethered to a slide projector for the ability to move around a room during presentations. He developed a way to use a wireless garage door opener to control a slide projector. This wireless concept would drive the vision of the company he and his wife Roslyn would start. He built the first product run and sent several to customers with an offer: “If you like them, pay me for them. If not, sent them back.”

With that first product batch ($1237 in total value), the MX20 (and AMX) was born.

The company gained regional, domestic and international attention and in Nov.1995 the company went public on the NASDAQ (under the”AMXX”). Shortly after, AMX made its first couple of acquisitions (AudioEase and PHAS) as part of a strategy to penetrate the residential market.

3rdTime Lucky? Colorado vNet Now 3vNet

Colorado vNet operates under a new name-- 3vNet, a rebranding following the completion of the April 2012 purchase of Colorado vNet from ex-owners Russound.

3vNetLeading the relaunch was company CEO Mike Anderson, who says 3vNet is a whole new company with new facilities, engineering and doubled tech support for dealers and customers.

The company also consolidates operations to a single location in Orlando, Florida, as part of a streamlining (cost cutting) effort.

Colorado vNet has something of a bumpy history-- launched by Bill Beierwaltes, it was closed down and eventually sold to Russound in 2008. On December 2010 Russound shut down Colorado vNet... a decision it reversed several weeks later.

Cables To Go Rebrands as C2G

Trade shows offer an opportunity to jumpstart any re-branding, so Cables To Go, provider of cabling and connectivity solutions, used InfoComm as their platform to rebrand as C2G.

It’s more and more a wireless world these days…not to suggest that wires will disappear…it’s just that connectivity today is far more than just wires.

This move by Cables To Go is actually overdue: the new C2G name will help communicate its broader direction of connectivity products (and it’s timed to match up with its European expansion).

At InfoComm 2012, C2G launched upgrades to its RapidRun Multi-Format cable line, TruLink HDMI over Cat5 and TruLink Media Gateway products, and the availability of ConnectXpress, a self-service on-line platform for selecting connectivity solutions.

BMB to Distribute HAI products

Netherlands-based BMB Electronics signs a distribution agreement to sell and support home automation products from HAI.

BMBHAI makes a selection of award-winning automation offerings-- including home control systems, programmable communicating thermostats, smart light switchines, whole home audio systems, video surveillance equipment, access control systems, touchscreen interfaces and online automation control software.

One can integrate HAI products wtih those from the company's Connectivity Partners, such as Elan, URC, Xantech, AMX, Crestron, KNX, Nuvo and Philips Dynalite.

"HAI product solutions perfectly fit the BMB product portfolio. They add a unique additional value to the entire product range, and to controlling lights especially. Our customers can buy everything they need for a complete installation,” BMB's Willem Bok says.

Leadership Changes Within Samsung

Gee-sung Choi steps down as Samsung CEO, succeeded by Vice Chairman and component business (chips and display) head Oh-hyun Kwon (in photo, left).

Samsung CEOA Samsung employee since 1985, Kwon became a senior executive in 1992 and leader of Samsung's logic chip efforts in 1998. He also led Samsung to becoming mobile processor supplier to no other than its biggest rival, Apple.

In separate news Samsung is building a $2 billion production line in S. Korea, where it will make mobile processors on 300mm wafers using 20 and 14nm technology.

However Samsung is shuffling internal structure by separating consumer and component segments-- with consumer product division leaders (such as TV and phones) not reporting to the new CEO.

Overseeing all operations is Chairman Kun-Hee Lee, son of the Samsung founder and arguably most important executive within the company.

On the other hand ex-CEO Choi has a new role as head of corporate strategy. He also acts as chief mentor to Jay Y. Lee, son of Lee Kun-hee and probable heir to the Samsung empire.

D&M Holdings Becomes D+M Group

The Denon, Marantz, Boston Acoustics and McIntosh owner changes name and branding-- what was D&M Holdings is now D+M Group, complete with new logo, motto and slew of product announcements.

DM LogoThe company motto now says "Performance is Everything," while the logo consists of a "dimensional D" (symbolising video) and sound waves making the "M."

"We are transforming the company and embracing changes to re-invent ourselves. That's what great companies do. We are going to build D+M Group into a new products machine," CEO Jim Caudil says during the re-branding announcement.

The company also promises new consumer-style packaging, increased global marketing and additions to different product categories such as headphones and docking radios.
