Spanish Government Wants to Tax the Sun

  • PDF

In Mediterranean countries using solar power sounds like a great idea-- but not so much in Spain, where the government punishes small solar energy producers with taxes, fines, and even "visits" from what amounts to the Solar Police.

Solar panelThe Local reports the Spanish government recently changed regulations to allows inspectors to raid suspicious properties through simple administrative authorisation. Should suspects deny entry the Industry Department simply asks for a court order to guarantee the inspectors access via national police.

Such measures join fines of up to €30 million on households failing to hook solar equipment to the national grid, and thus not paying the required taxes for the generation of own solar energy.

The former socialist government encouraged the installation of solar power equipment through subsidies and the 2011 legalisation private energy generation, known in Spain as "autoconsumo." As many as 5000 Spanish households took advantage of such schemes, investing in equipment to reduce power bills later.

Reportedly Spanish solar power generation capacity exceeds demand by over 60%.

ABB, Bosch, Cisco, LG Team Up in Home Automation

  • PDF

ABB, Bosch, Cisco and LG form a consortium working on a vendor neutral smart home software platform, signing a memorandum of understanding with the intention of developing "an open architecture for data exchange."

Smart Home PlatformAccording to the memorandum the software platform will allow the interoperation of diverse devices and software together with application software distribution.

"This will allow appliances and devices made by different manufacturers to be part of home automation, security, healthcare, and entertainment services," the companies say. Currently nothing of the sort exists, making it difficult for diverse devices to play nice with each other in a standardised way.

The standard should allow compatible appliance to communicate over wireless (wifi, ZigBee) and wired (KNX) networks, with a central control unit taking care of device management and secure internet links. It will also allow control via mobile devices, an arguably crucial element for any modern automation system.

Neo Smart Heating Control from Heatmiser

  • PDF

Smartphone heating control just got Smarter with the Neo control system from Heatmiser. Neo by Heatmiser has been designed to allow people to control their heating from their smartphone, with both the retrofit and the new build market in mind.

Neo kitHeatmiser Neo consists of three parts: the neoStat, the neoHub and the neoApp. The neoStat replaces the existing thermostat and a neoStat-hw replaces the programmer. The neoHub plugs into a broadband router and enables remote access of heating zones and hot water from anywhere at any time. These components can be supplied separately, or as a Starter Kit, with further neoStats added as required. Control is via the neoApp on a smartphone or tablet.

The system can be expanded as required by adding more neoStats. Neo uses a ZigBee-based mesh network to send data back to the neoHub, so has been designed for homes of any size. From the ground up, Neo was built with multi-zones in mind, so additional neoStats can be added for total zone control - a simple process via the neoApp for iOS or Android.

Integrating Fitness Equipment With Automation

  • PDF

A recently published patent application from Icon Health & Fitness describes a novel means of controlling a home automation system-- the integration of a treadmill (or other exercise gear) as a means of climate control optimisation.

Patent drawingFiled back in April 2013, the "Integrated Exercise Device Environment Controller" patent claims "variances in temperature can have a negative impact on the individual‘s exercise performance... it may be difficult for an individual to maintain their pace and/or form when the environment is uncomfortably warm or cool." Thus the need for integrated climate control, presumably.

What Nest Did Next

  • PDF

Around 2 years ago iPod creators Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers presented the Nest intelligent thermostat. Now the duo shift their efforts towards the humble smoke alarm, launching the Protect internet-connected smoke detector.

Nest ProtectClearly wanting to do what the Nest did to thermostats, the Protect makes smoke alarms more interesting-- if not more sexy, since instead of howling in alarm the Protect informs of emergencies by speaking in a human voice, with messages such as "heads-up, there’s smoke in the bedroom” or “emergency, there’s smoke.”

The default language is English, but it can also speak in French or Spanish.

Wifi connectivity allows it to forward alerts to smartphones via Nest app or connect with Nest thermostats to automatically turn heating off in case of carbon monoxide detection.

Why “Smart Building” is Important to You

  • PDF

The Smart Building Conference 2013, to be held at Dexter House, London, on Tues. Oct., 15th begs the question, “Why is Smart Building so important?”

SmartBuildingInfoComm and CEDIA (co-owners of ISE as well as the Smart Building conferences) clearly believe if you are in pro AV or residential installation, the most important subject for our future is Smart Building.

Smart Building is the shift in building technology that parallels our own industry’s shift from analogue to digital technology.
