Caavo Upgrades to Control Center

Caavo-- the startup founded by the developers of the Sling box-- is back with another stab at a universal remote-media hub combo. Dubbed the Control Center, it promises to manage all content across live TV, DVR, streaming services and the web.

Caavo Control CenterLaunched back in 2017, the first Caavo STB could control no less than 8 different devices at once, together with popular streaming services. The 2018 Control Center has similar, if somewhat stripped down, capabilities. For instance it lacks the IR-over-HDMI adapter for IR blasters, while the number of HDMI inputs is down from x8 to x4. Also gone is the wood paneling, replaced with a simple black facade.

An RTI Driver for Samsung 4K UHD TV Control

RTI announces a driver for the IP control of select 2017 and 2018 Samsung 4K UHD TVs, starting with the NU8 series and including the entire QLED series and The Frame TV.

Crestron Adds Josh.ai

Josh.ai crestronCrestron announces Josh.ai-- a provider of "luxury" voice control-- is an official Crestron integration partner, allowing installers to easily incorporate the Josh Micro device and app as part of a Crestron smart home.

The Crestron Pyng operating systems enables simple integration with the sleek Josh Micro device and app. To deploy Josh.ai modules from Pyng, installers simply need to authorise the Hub, and Josh.ai does the rest. Once enabled, Crestron smart home owners can control everything using natural language commands such as "OK Josh, set the thermostat to 35 degrees." Josh.ai also supports integration with Crestron systems via SIMPL Windows software.

It features a flush mount 2.8-inch colour touchscreen, allowing users to swipe left or right to easily access content. Three customisable buttons provide instant access to movies, music and lighting, and the remote is compatible with the Elan On Screen Display interface.

URC Adds Processors, Touchscreens at CEDIA 2018

URC highlights a pair of advanced system processors and two 10-inch touchscreen controllers at CEDIA Expo 2018-- the flagship MRX-30 and MRX-15 processors, the TDC-9100 touchscren controller and TKP-9600 touchscreen keypad.

URC CEDIAThe MRX-30 has a quad-core processor while the MRX-15 had a dual-core option. Both deliver powerful automation and control for residential and commercial installations, with instant two-way communication with Total Control products and compatible 3rd party devices. Both offer IP, IR, RS232, 12V trigger, relay and sensor communication for robust integration and superior performances.

The TDC-9100 tabletop controller features a touchscreen and integrated charging base. A built-in audio/video intercom offers room-to-room communication with live video. Connectivity comes through 2.4 and 5GHz wifi, together with a 10/100/1000 RJ45 ethernet port, and the processor is designed for either wired or wireless installation with PoE+.

Control4 Intros KNX Solution

CEDIA Expo 2018 sees Control4 launch a KNX solution, together with the addition of KNX support within Control4 OS and a new KNX product line allowing installers to deliver "superior experiences" in smart homes in Germany and the UK.

Control4The release deeply integrates KNX in the Control4 ecosystem, with 100 products covering lighting, HVAC, blinds and rollers, keypads, frames and bus management. A new Control4 KNX Network driver, supported in the latest Control4 OS release, natively connects to existing KNX devices within the home without need for 3rd party integration, enabling interoperability with the entire Control4 ecosystem, as well as support for Amazon Alexa voice control and over 12000 other connected products.

A PlayStation Cloud Remote for AV Control

Sony presents the Cloud Remote for PS4-- a co-development with Performance Designed Products aimed at customers wanting a single means to control all AV gear connected to the console, as well as the PS4.

PS4 Remote ControlThe Cloud Remote for PS4 automatically detects all AV hardware connected to the PS4, including the TV, projector, amplifier or speaker. To do so it uses the cloud, as built into the PDP Cloud Remote app. While not as versatile as anything from the likes of URC or Crestron, it does allow for basic functionality, as well as control of streaming services such as Netflix.
