IHS: Flat Panel Revenues on the Up

  • PDF

The global flat panel display market looks set to recover after 2 consecutive years of decline, IHS Markit reports-- 2017 revenues are forecast to total $110 billion, a 9.3% increase.

4K Display“While it would be unrealistic to expect an increase in unit demand next year in view of an overall sluggish global economy outlook, market revenue for flat panel display can be expected to grow significantly following a rebound in panel prices along with an increased demand for premium display products,” the analyst remarks.

The 2017 Y-o-Y growth rate of the flat panel display market by unit demand is projected to remain low at 0.3%. On the other hand, display area demand is expected to grow by 6.6%, while market revenue is to grow 9.3% over the same period.

An Retro LCD TV for a More Vintage Era

  • PDF

Japanese TV maker Doshisha presents an alternative to the ultra-thin TVs of today-- the Vintage Taste set features pleasingly chunky retro stylings, even if it packs a modern 20-inch LCD panel.

Doshidisha Vintage TasteIn fact the Vintage Taste features all connectivity options expected from a TV on the contemporary market, including USB and HDMI ports, LAN, AV and digital audio outputs. However the housing comes straight from the 1960's, with mahogany-red wood and off-white plastic construction, not to mention functional volume and channel switching knobs complete with satisfying ka-chunk sounds. Oh, and it sits on four-stilted legs.

Amusingly, since as mentioned earlier the TV is a modern LCD number, the housing meant for a cathode ray tube doubles as a storage space-- one can open the top to house other electronics, such as a DVD player or games console, or maybe hide a bottle of booze.

IHS Predicts Rapid Growth for HDR TVs

  • PDF

High Dynamic Range (HDR) TV shipments are to reach 4 million units in 2016 before growing to over 30m by 2020, IHS reports-- but the market for standard dynamic range (SDR) displays compatible with basic HDR formats will be four times as large.

IHS HDR TVs

Thus the analyst predicts nearly all the 112 million 4K TVs shipped in 2020 will be HDR-compatible, but only 30% will have "true" HDR performance capabilities. It also says global 4K TV demand should continue growing in 2016, even if overall TV shipments should decline "slightly," leading to concerns of lack of volume growth in the total market and continuous price erosion, particularly in categories such as 4K.

Technologies of the HDR variety promise to improve ASPs and profits, but only if the benefits of such technologies are communicated well to consumers.
