OnePlus (Finally) Debuts TVs

OnePlus follows on the drip-feed of details with the launch of two own-branded TV sets-- the Q1 and Q1 Pro, both featuring a 4K QLED panel with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support running on Android TV.

The choice of OS provides for some interesting integration with OnePlus smartphones, as well as support for both Google Assistant and Alexa. A OnePlus Connect companion app allows users to input text and switch between Android TV apps using the smartphone, and it automatically lowers TV volume when one receives a call on the phone. Chromecast support also comes built-in.

Sony Crystal LED Goes Residential

Sony announces the availability of the Crystal LED display system for home applications. Initially introduced for use in commercial and entertainment venues, the system can display 8K HDR content, with the possibility of scaling up to 16K resolution.

The Crystal LED system uses a ultra-fine micro-LEDs measuring 0.003mm², making them half the width of a human hair or 100x smaller than traditional LEDs. While small, the micro-LEDs can handle HDR with brightness of up to 1000 nits, as well as 10-bit grayscale and frame rates reaching 120p. The system also allows for nearly 180-degree viewing angles and "spectacular" 3D with non-standard aspect ratios and 99% black surface area for high contrast and high resolution.

CTA Sets 8K TV Standard

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) announces an official definition for 8K UHD TVs, together with a logo to help retailers and consumers identify products meeting the standard 8K UHD requirements.

CTA 8K StandardThe standard states an 8K TV features 7680 x 4320 resolution, allowing for 33 million active pixels within a 16:9 viewable window. Such as set should also offer at least one HDMI input with 7680 x 4320 resolution support, 10-bit image depth, frame rates reaching 24, 30 and 60fps, HDR capability, colorimetry as specified by ITU-R BT.2100 and HDCP v2.2 or equivalent content protection.

In addition, an 8K TV has to be able upscale SD, HD and 4K video and display it at 8K UHD resolution. as well as receive 10-bit 8K images and render an image showing responsiveness to changes to any of the 10 bits. Meanwhile the logo is an extension of the 2014 CTA 4K UHD logo.

GfK: 4K TV Becomes Standard

According to GfK, H1 2019 global TV revenues total €44 billion-- a -8% Y-o-Y decline, partly attributable to sales related to the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Global sales are set to total 210 million in 2019, a -2% decrease compared to 2018.

4K TV GfKThe analyst points out premium TV features, such as 4K resolution and OLED technology, are up in terms of sales share, while the TV sound ecosystem is thriving. For instance, 4K TV sales are up by 11% in H1 2019, and are expected to total 100m for full-year 2019. Meanwhile OLED penetration sees an 11% turnover share in Europe, and "robust" growth across the globe.

Motorola, Smart TV Maker

Motorola decides to do like smartphone rival OnePlus and launch an own smart TV range-- the imaginatively named Motorola TV, with sets ranging from 32- to 65-inch featuring IPS panels running on Android 9.0.

Like the OnePlus TV, the Motorola TV is primarily aimed at the Indian market. It is developed in partnership with Flipkart, a Walmart-owned online retailer that, in the subcontinent, rivals the mighty Amazon in size. According to Motorola the TVs offer bright images and wide 178-degree viewing angles, making them well adapted for Bollywood movies, and include Dolby Vision and HDR 10 capability.
