Epicrystal

We introduced you last issue to the Samsung Galaxy Beam, an Android smartphone with a built-in projector.

Now VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, EpiCrystals Oy and Aalto University believe they have a “better laser light source” for projectors that will be integrated into mobile phones and expect mobile phones equipped with this laser light source can be within consumer reach in a few years time.

The Wearable, Multitouch Projector

  • PDF

Microsoft demoes some interesting research work during the internal TechFest event-- such as a wearable multitouch projector prototype.

wearable projectorThe projector sits on the user's shoulder, beaming images via pico projector on walls the wearer can interact with as a fully interactive surface. Handling interactions is a depth-sensing camera.

The TechFest prototype displays a Windows Phone-style graphical user interface, complete with touch, pinch-to-zoom and scrolling.

While the work is still in early prototype phase, Microsoft hopes to make the hardware smaller and thus more portable. We already have pico projectors integrated in mobile devices-- will they be turning walls into touch surfaces in a few years' time?

Samsung refreshes the projector-phone combo at Mobile World Congress 2012 with the Galaxy Beam-- an Android 2.3 handset packing a built-in pico projector.

galaxy beamThe most interesting feature, of course, is the projector-- a TI DLP number offering images nHD resolution (640x360) with 15 lumens of brightness, with projected image width of up to 130cm (50-inches).

owering all is a 2000mAh battery, which Samsung says should provide up to 3 hours of continuous projector use on a single charge. It is also not too thick, at just 12.5mm.

Samsung also promises docks (stabilising the phone and boosting sound) should be available "in select markets" sometime in Q2 2012-- once the Galaxy Beam hits the market.
