Leviton Ships HomeKit-Enabled Switch, Dimmers

Leviton starts shipping its line of HomeKit-enabled switches and dimmers-- including the Decora Smart 1000W DH1KD dimmer, the 600W DH6HD dimmer and the DH155 15A switch.

Leviton Decora HomeKitFirst announced back at CES 2016, the dimmers and switch are HomeKit-compatible and need no hub, allowing users to control them directly together with other enabled 3rd party products via Siri voice commands, as well as the Decora Smart Home app.

The Decora app provides customisable settings according to bulb type, with adjustable fade rate, minimum and maximum illumination levels, and more. One can also add the Leviton switch and dimmers to HomeKit Scenes for automation presets based on time of day, who's home and other parameters.

Ikea Takes on Smart Lighting

Swedish furniture maker Ikea is the next company to take on smart lighting, as it launches a range of LED bulbs, lighting panels and doors controllable via either remote or mobile device app.

ikea lightingDubbed the Smart Lighting Collection, the range has a flagship product in the shape of Trådfri-- dimmable LED bulbs in 2200, 2700 and 4000K colour options. Designed to fit in a range of fittings, the bulbs pair with a gateway users connect to the router via ethernet. As mentioned earlier control comes through remote or app, with the app offering customisable lighting options, timers and remote on/off control.

Philips Presents Hue E14 Candle

Philips Lighting announces the Hue E14-- a candle light bulb compatible with the Hue app-controlled lighting system, available in both colour and white ambiance versions.

Philips Hue CandleThe E14 fits in a wide range of household lighting fixtures (up to 80% of sockets used across the world, the company claims), and offers identical functionality to other Hue products. It is a 40W equivalent bulb with 470 lumens brightness. Customers need to pair the candle bulb with the Hue Bridge accessory before control through the companion smartphone app.

Control features such as custom lighting colours, schedules and geo-fencing, as well as simple on/off switching. Philips says candle light bulbs are mainly used in decorative lamps for the bedroom, and the white ambiance bulb has dimming features promising better sleep.

Once the bulb is in the socket users can set up the bulb via companion app, since it pairs directly with smartphones via wifi. The app allows one to set up schedules, geo-fences able to activate and deactivate according to user location, and custom lighting scenes. Siri support provides voice control, and the bulb can pair with others for the control of multiple units.

Crestron Aims Zūm at App-Based Lighting Control

Crestron announces Zūm (pronounced "ZOOM"), a package of essential "building block" devices for the design, setup and management of app-based lighting control in any space.

Crestron ZumThe Zūm system includes wireless dimmers, switches and sensors, all engineered to work together wirelessly. Setup requires a few taps on a keypad, dimmer or mobile app, and a single load controller supports up to 32 devices. Each device has a wireless range of 45m in every direction, and mesh networking allows communications to hop from one device to the other, with no need for interface boxes or antennae.

The system can from standalone systems to centralised building-wide control and network management in "literally a snap," since the Zūm network bridge "snaps" into a Zūm load controller to add remote setup, daylighting, time clock scheduling, temporary overrides and other advanced capabilities.

Sylvania smart bulbLighting vendor Ledvance presents the Sylvania Smart Multicolor A19-- a HomeKit-enabled smart bulb customers can control via Siri or Home app, without need for a separate hub controller.

Installation promises to be very easy, since one simply needs to screw the bulb in place before syncing with HomeKit. The bulb works when users are both inside or outside the home, with a connected Apple TV or iOS 10-enabled iPad acting as a hub for remote control. Customers can combine the Sylvania smart bulbs with other HomeKit-enabled devices to create custom scenes through the Home app, such as an "I'm on my way home" command activating lights, unlocking the door and turning on the thermostat.
