Sony Takes on Lighting-Speakers

Sony announces the LED Light Bulb Speaker, a self-explanatory product combining an app-controlled LED light bulb with a Bluetooth speaker to provide lighting and audio from a single devices.

Sony Light bulb speakerTechnically a consumer version of a prototype first seen at IFA 2014, the LED Light Bulb Speaker carries a 40mm driver to produce up to 2W of audio through an unshielded front. Pairing with audio sources comes via Bluetooth 3.0.

On the lighting side it produces up to 360 lumens of illumination. Users can fine-tune lighting levels via mobile device app, but the bulb lacks Philips Hue-stye colour-changing capability.

Sony also includes a dedicated NFC remote.

The LED Light Bulb Speaker hits the Japanese market by end May 2015. Sony gives no word of a European release, at least as yet.
