Integrating Fitness Equipment With Automation

A recently published patent application from Icon Health & Fitness describes a novel means of controlling a home automation system-- the integration of a treadmill (or other exercise gear) as a means of climate control optimisation.

Patent drawingFiled back in April 2013, the "Integrated Exercise Device Environment Controller" patent claims "variances in temperature can have a negative impact on the individual‘s exercise performance... it may be difficult for an individual to maintain their pace and/or form when the environment is uncomfortably warm or cool." Thus the need for integrated climate control, presumably.

The patent says exercise machines can measure user heart rate and body temperature, as combined with machine pace and incline, to adjust climate according to preset "scenes." Climate control takes place via communication with home automation hub managing not only fans and HVAC, but even misters and other climate controlling devices.

Also detailed is the integration of climate controls within the exercise machine for the user to modify the climate as required, creating a "desirable workout environment" in the process.
