Rovi: W. Europeans Stream More Video

Rovi presents the results of a Consumer Mobile Streaming survey at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013-- and reveals how more W. Europeans are consuming streaming video on their mobile devices.

iPad streamingThe survey covers consumers in Italy, France, Spain, the UK and the US.

In fact, according to Rovi the majority of respondents stream video on mobile devices "at least" 2-3 times per week, and demand more premium video content (mostly TV shows and movies) on mobile devices.

Italy and Spain show the highest streaming frequency, with 73% and 71% of respective consumers streaming video on tablets 2-3 times per week or more. However just 20% of overall mobile users rate the quality of their video streams as "excellent," pointing out an opportunity for new adaptive streaming technologies such as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC).

Survey respondents demand quick loading and smooth playback, as well as the ability to pause video and then resume on the same or a different device.

Tablet users in the UK have the longest streaming media sessions (66% have average sessions of 30 minutes or more), while Italians have the shortest attention spans with the average session being just 3-10 minutes long.

The vast majority (80%) of streaming media on tablets is consumed at home, with just 15% taking advantage of such video technology while commuting at work, in which case mobile phones (50%) are the device of choice.

“The survey results suggest we have clearly entered into a new era of IP-based video services,” Rovi says. “The entertainment landscape is undergoing a tectonic shift as viewers transition from traditional devices to connected mobile platforms.”

At MWC 2013 Rovi showcases a 720p HEVC solution integrated with DivX Plus streaming.
