LG starts taking orders for its 55-inch curved OLED TV (model 55EA9800) in its home S. Korea, making it the first and only (for now!) company actually selling the curvy display technology.
First seen as LG and Samsung CES 2013 prototypes, curved OLED TVs are described in over-enthusiastic press releases as "IMAX-like," with the curved display supposedly "eliminating the problem of screen-edge visual distortion and loss of detail."
The LG TV is just 4.3mm thick and weighs 17kg, and provides the crisp colours, deep blacks and infinite contrast ratio typical of OLED displays via LG WRGB technology. Audio comes through thin transparent film speakers built inside the "crystal clear" stand.
The LG curved OLED TV will be available in S. Korea from May 2013 with a healthy KRW 15 million Korean ($13500) price tag. Expect an announcement regarding launch in our side of the world soon enough.
