HomeKit Launch Faces Delay?

  • PDF

Fortune reports customers have to wait longer for the launch of devices making use of HomeKit, the Apple home automation platform-- the launch has been moved from a May-June timeframe to "late August or September."

HomeKitAdmittedly Apple has never provided a HomeKit launch date, but the rumour mill long suggested products will hit the shelves by either (American)Mother's or Father's Day. Technically HomeKit is already available, since it makes part of iOS 8, but compatible consumer devices still have to enable HomeKit support within their companion apps.

According to Fortune's unnamed sources Apple met with unexpected delays in the creation of the platform-- apparently the code handling the sign-in procedures for the control of connected devices "blew up." In a few words, the process uses too much iPhone memory, and a code shrinkage is required. Another problem, Fortune adds, comes from lighting.

Meanwhile mysteries still surround the role Apple TV will take in the HomeKit-enabled home, if at all.

In its turn Apple denies any HomeKit delays. “HomeKit has been available for just a few months and we already have dozens of partners who have committed to bringing home accessories to market," the company tells Fortune. "We are looking forward to the first ones coming next month.”

Such a statement suggests Apple plans make a HomeKit-related announcement at Worldwide Developers Conference 2015, possibly together with the much rumoured Apple TV update.
