Seymour Screen Excellence brings to market the first tunable white bias lighting kit in the CEDIA channel-- an offering one can adjust from 3000 to 20000K to achieve a true 6500K colour temperature.

Seymour colour kitProperly calibrated backlighting (aka hue) behind and around the film screen improves contrast and reduces eye strain, making it especially useful when combining a high-brightness projector with an ambient light rejecting (ALR) film screen in a darkened room setting.

The kit consists of LED light strip assembly the installer tapes around the rear of the fixed-frame film screen. An included IR remote allows the calibrator to bring the colour temperature up or down to best suit the wall colour, using a colour metre (not included) to measure temperature. According to the company, in case of yellow or orange walls one needs to dial the kit towards a blue or cool tint to increase the ambient bias lighting up to 6500K. If the walls are on the bluish, the kit should be dialed towards the warm end to decrease ambient bias lighting down to 6500K.

ALR film screens are beneficial in rooms subject to daylight or other lighting one cannot completely control. Additionally, some homeowners opt for a high brightness projector with an ALR screen to achieve an eye-popping big screen experience exceeding the size of a flatscreen TV. However ALR screens are prone to problems affecting performance, namely colour shifting, hot spotting, ringing and sparkling.
