Samsung Builds TVs With MicroLEDs at CES

  • PDF

Samsung shows off a possible glimpse of the future at CES 2019 with an update on the MicroLED technology seen a year ago-- specifically in the shape of a 75-inch 4K TV built using multiple microLED modules.

Samsung MicroLED TVMicroLED technology was first seen in the shape of The Wall, a gigantic 146-inch display. The 75-inch model at CES 2019 is more suitable for the living room, but is built using the same foundation of "individual modules of self-emissive MicroLEDs, featuring millions of inorganic red, green and blue microscopic LED chips that emit their own light to produce brilliant colors on screen."

MicroLEDs need no backlight, allowing for a thin profile, and Samsung promises best-in-class brightness, perfect blacks and a wide HDR colour palette, all without the degradation issues of OLED panels. In addition, MicroLED panels are bezel-free and can be mounted in a variety of configurations, including unconventional aspect rations such as 32:9 or 1:1.

The S. Korean giant is still to detail the launch window or pricing for the MicroLED product offering, and it says it will only do so later this year. What is said to arrive sooner is the surprise addition of iTunes to 2019 Samsung Smart TV models. Q2 2019 will see such TVs receive an iTunes Movies and TV Shows app via firmware update. The update also includes AirPlay 2 support, allowing customers to play media from iDevices on their Samsung Smart TV.

"We look forward to bringing the iTunes and AirPlay 2 experience to even more customers around the world through Samsung Smart TVs, so iPhone, iPad and Mac users have yet another way to enjoy all their favorite content on the biggest screen in their home,” Apple says.
