Select Sony Android smart TVs are getting an Alexa app adding a number of features from the Amazon smart assistant, including the ability to control Ring smart cameras and finding music using voice.

The Sony TVs getting such functionalities are all 2019 models, most 2018 models,  2017 mid-range models (A1E, X940E, X930E, X900E, X850E, X800E) and a number of 2016 sets (Z9D, X800D, X750D, X700D). Previously Alexa functionality on an Android smart TVs required integration with both an Echo speaker and a Fire TV device, but the app allows voice commands without need for extra hardware.

Once installed, the simply named Amazon Alexa app allows users to control the TV with an "Alexa, turn on [TV name]" voice command. The TV can also act as a hub for any Alexa-based smart home devices, such as security cameras and doorbell cameras, not to mention control of a number of 3rd party media streaming apps.

The app is available now for the aforementioned Sony TVs in the UK, Germany, Spain, France, Austria and the Republic of Ireland.
