Amazon-owned home security company Ring announces the 2nd generation Alarm, an update featuring one-touch buttons within smaller, sleeker hardware, as well as slimmer motion and contact sensors, all complete with a matte finish.

The one-touch buttons allow users to call for police, fire or medical assistance with just a 3-second tap. The system remains compatible with other Ring hardware, while the sensors are easier to mount. Like the previous generation, it detects motion, smoke, carbon monoxide and leaks, and pushes notifications to smartphones in case of problems.

On the software side, the Ring can be controlled via either smartphone app or the Alexa voice assistant. Users can access basic functionality with app notifications for free, but other kinds of home monitoring (including emergency response tools in case of break-ins) require a monthly subscription with the Plus plan.

The 2nd generation Ring Alarm is available in 5-, 10- and 14-piece kits designed for use in different-size houses. All include the base station, keypad, motion and contact sensors and a range extender.
