Apple Working on "Adaptive" Audio Format?

  • PDF

According to The Guardian Apple is working on a new audio format-- "adaptive streaming," with either high/low-quality audio files for either downloading or streaming via iCloud.

Apple logoIf one is to believe the report adaptive streaming will provide iCloud users with low- or high-resolution file streaming, depending on the bandwidth and storage available on their devices.

"All of a sudden, all your audio from iTunes is in HD rather than AAC. Users wouldn’t have to touch a thing; their library will improve in an instant," the anonymous source says.

No details on format specifics or release dates are yet available, but The Guardian believes the new streaming technology might debut on the upcoming iPad 3 announcement event.

Earlier this year Neil Young claimed Steve Jobs wanted to develop new high-resolution audio formats as an alternative to MP3 and AAC. The musician insists "what everybody gets [on MP3] is 5% of what we originally make in the studio... We live in the digital age, and unfortunately it's degrading our music, not improving."

Meanwhile Ars Technica claims Apple is now encouraging music companies to provide 24-bit/96kHz audio files to sell (and potentially stream?) on the iTunes service.

The "Down-Firing" Sub

  • PDF

Atlantic Technology launches the SB-900DF-- a compact subwoofer with the woofer and bass vent on the bottom of the speaker cabinet, explaining why the company describes it as "down-firing."

SB-900DFAs a result, one can squeeze the SB-900DF in tight spots, without worrying the backs of furniture will muffle output (as might be the case with the original SB-900 front-firing subwoofer).

The sub is relatively small, with an 8" excursion woofer with an oversized surround, high-energy magnet and 125W amplifier. Auto-on sensing saves power (and the need for turning it on/off manually), and tuning controls include adjustable crossover and phase switch.

Peak output is 102 dB SPL, and frequency response is 32-200 Hz, ±3 dB.

Revox Reveals Invisible Speaker Series

  • PDF

Revox shows off the Re:sound I speaker series at ISE 2012-- an ultrathin "invisible" panel speaker series installers can hide behind plaster, paint or wallpaper.

Re:soundThe company says the speakers make use of "bending waves," or physical waves moving within the material the soundboard is made of. As the soundboard oscillates (in a controlled manner), it turns the walls or ceiling into a sounding board with an emission angle of up to 180-degrees.

Speaker sizes are equal to DIN standards used in dry wall construction, meaning one can use the speakers instead of plaster board. The speakers themselves connect to Revox compact side room amps via standard speaker cable.

Sound panels come in 2 performance classes-- 40 or 80W, in either "C" (ceiling, 400mm wide) or "W" (wall, 625mm wide) models pre-treated in primer coating. An "A" version is also available for use in wood paneling, furnitore or behind mirrors.

Performance-wise, the panels offer frequency response of 100Hz - 18kHz with an efficiency of 88dB, depending on application.

Google to Take on Living Room Sound

  • PDF

The Wall Street Journal reports Google is expanding efforts to take over the living room-- with a Google-branded wireless music streaming system.

AndroidSelling own-branded hardware would be a first (and a significant shift) for Google, whose Android OS is used by other companies to power devices such as smartphones, tablets and TVs.

While very little is known about the supposed Google music streaming system, it will probably be similar to wireless audio offerings from the likes of Sonos or Apple. The WSJ says it will also stream music to web-connected devices and "Google-made speakers."

It could also be linked to Android @Home-- the home device networking framework revealed at Google I/O on May 2011. Back then, Google demoed the system using an Android smartphone to control on-stage lighting.

While Google never sold actual hardware, it does have expertise from purchase Motorola. And it also has a cloud-based music service, Google Music. Unsurprisingly, everything adds up...

Current Audio Shows LCR Loudspeakers

  • PDF

Current Audio unveils the LCR Theatre Series infinite baffle loudspeakers at ISE 2012, with two left/centre/right models on display at the show.

Current AudioThe WSLCR654FL is the high-end model, with two 6.5" woven carbon fibre drivers (with a butyl rubber surround) and 1" pivoting ferrofluid-coold dome tweeter. The company says the pivoting design defies sound diffraction, allowing for precise penetration of concentrated sound.

The more economical second model, the WSLCR650F, carries two 6.5" MetaPlex composite drivers (wiith butyl rubber surround) together with the 1" pivoting tweeter. The dome tweeter is silk ferrofluid-cooled, delivering sound performance comparable to the higher-priced model.

Both speakers feature a FastLoc grill, which slips into place without magnets and offers what Current says is the smallest exposed bezel on the market.

Entry-Level 3D Audio From Tannoy

  • PDF

Tannoy follows up on the SFX 5.1 with the TFX 5.1-- now offering Dolby True HD and DTS HD-Master Audio compatibility in an entry-level all-in-one package.

TannoyThe TFX satellite and centre channel speakers carry Tannoy WideBand technology, with a tweeter extending response to over 70kHz and surround sound freqnecies to up to 48kHz (LPCM at 96kHz/24-bit).

The company says the original enclosures from the SFX are now reshaped and streamlined, eliminating standing sound waves in key frequencies while getting the best from the driver and crossover upgrades. Cabinet construction is "advanced polymer," while revised bracing delivers tighter mid-range punch.

The TFX subwoofer also sees improvement, with a long-throw 8" driver and 100-watt class A/B amplifier. Finally, a revised TFX filter network should ensure seamless bass and satellite output integration, for a smoother full-range soundstage.

Niles Launches Ceiling-Mount Speaker

  • PDF

Niles presents the CM4PR-- a high-end 4" 2-way ceiling-mount speaker the company says is ideal for smaller spaces where customers demand the reduction of sound bleed-through.

Niles Limiting sound transfer is a rear wave control enclosure, which Niles says also enchances acoustic performance. A mineral-filled polypropylene cone improves bass response (while lowering distortion) and a 1" fluid-cooled Teteron dome tweeter provides ultra-wide dispersion.

Frequency response is 70Hz to 21kHz +/- 3dB, plus 8 ohm nominal and 6 ohm minimum impedance.

Magnetically-attached MicroThin speaker grilles allow for quick installation. Weighing 1.2kg, the speaker needs a hole cutout of only 11.75cm, with a depth behind ceiling of 8.4cm.
