Magenta HD-One LX for HDMI over Single UTP Cable

  • PDF

Magenta Research announces the debut of a new extension product in the Infinea HD-One Series. The HD-One LX is an HDMI extension product that utilizes a single Cat5/6 cable, and now sends 1080p up to 328ft/100m.

Magenta HD-One LX

"Magenta is very excited to offer yet another single cable HDMI extension product that, unlike many other solutions, sends uncompressed 1080p video with audio, IR and RS-232 up to 328ft without the need for a second UTP cable,” stated Ed Caceres, Magenta Research’s Engineering Manager “HD-One LX is a perfect solution for remotely locating an HDMI source, whether in a commercial digital signage installation or residential home theater."

HD-One LX is fully HDCP-compliant and capable of extending uncompressed 1080p video, audio, IR and Bi-directional RS 232 to 328ft/100m allowing commands and data to flow in both directions.

Says the company: “The distance reach and use of inexpensive, easy to terminate UTP cable makes this product an obvious choice for HDMI extension whether it’s a Blu-Ray player, cable/set-top box or a PC with an HDMI output. Such distances are virtually impossible to replicate using specially constructed HDMI cables, which, even at short distances, deteriorate image quality, are extremely difficult to terminate in the field and carry a high cost factor.“

HD over IP Second Generation

HD over IP Second Generation

Just Add Power demonstrated their second generation HD over IP solution with their own developed 2G processor at the heart.

Their 2G Processor is a proprietary Silicon On Chip (SOC) design with an ARM9 CPU with a maximum running frequency of 275MHz. The CPU core includes 16KB I-cache, 16KB D-Cache, a Memory Management Unit (MMU), and two AHB system buses.

The Just Add Power 2G Processor integrates an algorithm for an 8-pixels-by-8-pixels block-based compression scheme. Before compression, the captured RGB-format video stream is automatically converted to a YUV format video stream. The video compression engine automatically monitors any scene change block by block. Only the blocks with a scene change will be compressed again. This significantly reduces the average network bandwidth requirement.

With 2G, Just Add Power moves from 100BT network architecture to a 1000BT platform for the necessary bandwidth to implement the patented visually lossless codec (and it’s the most distinctive characteristic of the 2G HD over IP design).

Another key aspect of the 2G HD over IP solution is the transition from a totally fixed IP address on the Receivers to an IP address that can be set in the field (to eliminate the possibility of accidentally shipping a duplicate Receiver IP address to a customer.)
The last significant difference between the 1G and 2G solution is the elimination of the scaler function in the HD over IP Receiver. This change makes it necessary for the installer to ensure that the selected screens for a 2G HD over IP solution are able to support the video signal resolution settings of the distributed source devices.

Initially the 2G Just Add Power HD over IP devices will be offered in the same 4 form factors as the 1G family (Standard Transmitter, Convertible Rackmount 3X Transmitter, Standard Receiver, and PoE Receiver), with additional form factors being developed and expected to be available in the near future.

While the overall appearance is very similar between the 1G and 2G devices , it is important to realize that they will not communicate with each other. Customers with 1G systems installed cannot use the 2G devices to expand their HDMI over IP matrix.

The Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) announces the results of a study into coaxial infrastructure in homes in the UK, France, Netherlands and Poland: there is a significant addressable market for coaxial cable-based home networking in these countries.

Results from the UK and France were very similar, with 56% and 55%, respectively, of respondents stating they had two or more coaxial outlets in their home, while more than a quarter of respondents in both countries indicated they have three or more.

MOCA
In Poland, the results were even stronger, with 71% of respondents stating that they have two or more coaxial outlets and 36 per cent having three or more. The Netherlands recorded 45 per cent of households as having two or more outlets and 15 per cent having three or more. The four countries were chosen because of their competitive pay-TV environments, increasing penetration of HDTVs and DVRs, number of TVs per household and the high daily TV viewing hours.

MOCA network

"This survey helps us gain an understanding of the potential for MoCA," said Charles Cerino, President of MoCA. "The high percentage of homes having two or more coaxial outlets in these countries means that there is a significant addressable market opportunity for service providers wanting to offer advanced high bandwidth services with high reliability and without adding any new wires."

"The picture we get in the countries surveyed is that there are more outlets per home than had been presumed by the industry and that many consumers are willing to add extra coax drops as needed to enable a better TV experience throughout their home." says Stephen Froehlich, Senior Analyst, Consumer Electronics at IMS Research, who oversaw the research.

The online survey was carried out by IMS Research in February 2010 targeting respondents in the UK, France, The Netherlands and Poland. The sample size was statistically significant at 95% confidence level. These results cannot be extrapolated across other parts of Europe, and that additional research is needed.

MoCA is willing to work with operators in Europe that may be interested in replicating this study in their footprint.

First "Field-Terminatable" HDMI Cable-Mount Connector

  • PDF

BTX Technologies introduces what they call "the industry's first field-terminatable HDMI cable- mount male connector."

And yes, they coined the new word "terminatable" to help describe their innovative device that allows installers to easily create custom length HDMI assemblies of up to 39 feet at resolutions of 1080p, 12-bit deep color.

For A/V, home theater, digital signage, or any other application requiring HDMI, BTX's new field-terminatable connector resolves the issue of fitting a connector through conduit, and eliminates excess cable behind the rack or inside a wall.

This HDMI 1.4 compliant connector is terminated through the insulation displacement connection (IDC) process, which requires only a blade and a HDMI hand tool, and can easily be accomplished with minimal training or skill.

IDC technology works by mechanically forcing an unstripped conductor into a v-shaped metal blade. The opening of the v-shaped metal blade is smaller than the diameter of the conductor that is being inserted. This causes the blades to spread open and expose the bare copper to the terminating blades, which makes for an extremely secure and reliable connection.

"Field-terminatable HDMI connectors have been the most anticipated connector breakthrough for years, and we are very proud to be the first to offer them to installers," states Mark Chernoff, director of marketing and strategic sales at BTX Technologies.

"Until now, installers have had to rely on pre-made assemblies in standard lengths, because with 19 conductors to terminate, soldering of HDMI connectors is almost impossible in the field. Thanks to our IDC technology, installers can now create any length they need up to 39 feet, with lengths of 65 feet attained using common booster products currently found in the market."

SUPRA HF100 MET-B

How cool is it to have HDMI cable with removable die-cast connector shells that allow the cable to be pulled through conduits for install. There's even a protective braid (to pull the cable in a conduit) that comes free in the pack.

Jenving Technology's SUPRA HF100 MET-B High-Speed HDMI cables have a new removable housing, that allows installers to remove the bulky outer shell, leaving just the inner connector, which is factory terminated to the cable.

The new cables feature a Supra innovation: removable HDMI bodies, which have TWO basic functions:

1) When the HDMI body is removed, (via two small screws) it allows the cable to be passed through small conduits, which aids installations.

2) The HDMI body is available in TWO shapes - the straight version and the curved version - so the cable can be dressed at the back of the equipment, which then puts less stress on both the cable and the HDMI socket….

The cables are fitted as standard with 2 straight HDMI bodies, but in the pack is both a shaped body (as well as some strong nylon braid).

These High Speed (Category 2) HDMI cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 340Mhz or up to 10.2Gbps and can successfully handle1080p signals including those at increased colour depths and/or increased refresh rates from the source.

SCP's HDMI Extender

  • PDF
SCP 948
At InfoComm, we saw the SCP 948 HDMI extender that uses CAT-5E/6 cable as transmission media.

The 948 offers solutions for digital entertainment center, HDTV retail and show site, HDTV, STB, DVD and projector factory, noise, space and security concerns, data center control, information distribution, conference room, presentation, school and corporate training environments.

Benefits from using HDMI EXTENDER SCP-948:

1) The length of HDMI cable is fixed and unchangeable after it is produced. Because the HDMI connector can only be soldered or terminated by professional worker in factory, the users cannot reduce or increase cable length. However CAT-5E/6 cables are available everywhere and be processed easily by user or installer.

2) By using SCP-948 the transmission distance for 1080P reaches 50 meters, 60 meters for 1080I. For general HDMI cables, cables must be customized when the length is over 10 meters.

3) HDMI EXTENDER 948 has the ability of buffering and amplifying. Series connection of SCP-948 achieves long distance transmission of HDMI signal. When two pairs or more SCP-948 are stacked together, they can be used to create a larger distribution(daisy chained.)
