Logitech CEO: Revue "A Mistake"

  • PDF

Logitech CEO Guerrino De Luca doesn't hold his tongue-- describing the Logitech Revue as "...not a mistake of strategy, it's a mistake of implementation of a gigantic nature."

Logitech RevueDe Luca continues by saying the Google TV software was "not complete and not tuned" to what costumers want-- resulting in a product costing the company over $100M in operational profit (in combination with EMEA-related operational pains).

Can we assume there won't be a Revue 2? Probably. Logitech will bring "closure to the Logitech Revue saga" by simply letting inventory run out, with no plans to either make new units or "introduce another box to replace Revue."

However De Luca says the Google TV platform has potential-- but Logitech prefers to "sit on the bench." With Sony working on its "four screen strategy" uniting TV with PCs, consoles and mobile devices, Google appears to be out of TV partners unless it creates an attractive enough bait.

As for the Revue, it will still receive a Honeycomb-flavoured update later this year.

Google TV Learns Some New Tricks

  • PDF

Google TV gets the long-awaited update to Android 3.1-- with UI improvements, Android Market access and an app handling TV content aggregation.

Google TVThe going has been rough for Google TV to say the least. Logitech reportws Revue returns were "higher than the very modest sales" back in August 2011, while Google still fails to fix various content blocks from a number of cable suppliers.

The updated Google TV now has 30-50 apps optimised for TV-use available from the Android Market, as well as a number of mobile apps tweaked a little to run on TV screens. Users can also install non-market apps.

Youtube gets a proper TV interface, with dynamic "channels" playing videos as soon as users type in search terms, and a TV and Movies app aggregating content from multiple sources (including live TV, HBO Go, Netflix, Amazon and Youtube).

The update will first roll out on Sony devices, before hitting the Logitech Revue "soon thereafter."

Sainsbury's Makes Purchase in Online Entertainment

  • PDF

UK supermarket Sainsbury's purchases "white label" online entertainment company Global Media Vault from MBL PLC for £1 million, saying “customers will soon be able to buy, rent or stream content from Sainsbury’s.”

Sainsbury'sGlobal Media Vault will operate with Sainsbury's as main client, and has a database containing 3M music, film and game assets for the UK market.

"Online retailing and the delivery of digital content will play a key role in the future of entertainment," Sainsbury's says.

The purchase follows the launch of Sainsbury's Entertainment website back in November 2010-- which we assume will soon start offering video-on-demand and online rental together with the physical DVDs and Blu-ray discs it already sells.

Netflix Says No More Qwikster

  • PDF

Netflix will keep the DVDs after all-- and abandons the controversial plans to spin off DVD rentals into "Qwikster," resulting in... no more changes (other than the previous unpopular changes to pricing structures).

NetflixThe news comes through a surprise blog update from CEO Reed Hastings.

"It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs," Hastings writes.

Announced just 3 weeks ago, the plan was to have "Netflix" handle streaming video-on-demand, while "Qwikster" was to handle DVD-by-mail-- a move described as either a stroke of genius or simply idiotic, depending on who you were talking to.

Can we conclude Netflix will arrive on European shores in complete form once it launches over here in 2012? No word about that yet, unsurprisingly.

Xbox 360 to Move Beyond Gaming?

  • PDF

Microsoft announces more content will be available for Xbox 360 console users-- specifically TV content, as Microsoft wants to transform the device from console to A/V entertainment hub.

Xbox TVNearly 40 TV and entertainment providers worldwide will offer content, including BBC (UK), Telefonica (Spain), ZDF (Germany) and MediaSet (Italy), with access to both live and on-demand programming via Xbox LIVE account.

The games console will also offer online video and music content from providers including DailyMotion, iHeartRadio, VEVO and Youtube.

The service will be Kinect-compatible-- meaning (in theory at least) users will be able to tell their Xbox what they want to watch or to switch between games and TV.

Microsoft will launch the service in more than 20 countries in the holiday season.
