LG and Sony Build Speakers Directly in OLED Panel

  • PDF

LG and Sony reveal what is essentially the same idea at CES 2017-- OLED TVs with speakers built right into the display panel. LG dubs the technology "Crystal Sound," while its Japanese rival calls it "Acoustic Surface."

LG Crystal SoundThe concept for the technology is based on the wafer-thin nature of OLED panels. A pair of tiny speaker drivers can deliver audio signals to the panel, causing it to vibrate in order to produce sound. The two companies claim the result is more immersive than traditional TV speakers, since the sound comes directly from the screen, as opposed to from below or beside it.

An Retro LCD TV for a More Vintage Era

  • PDF

Japanese TV maker Doshisha presents an alternative to the ultra-thin TVs of today-- the Vintage Taste set features pleasingly chunky retro stylings, even if it packs a modern 20-inch LCD panel.

Doshidisha Vintage TasteIn fact the Vintage Taste features all connectivity options expected from a TV on the contemporary market, including USB and HDMI ports, LAN, AV and digital audio outputs. However the housing comes straight from the 1960's, with mahogany-red wood and off-white plastic construction, not to mention functional volume and channel switching knobs complete with satisfying ka-chunk sounds. Oh, and it sits on four-stilted legs.

Amusingly, since as mentioned earlier the TV is a modern LCD number, the housing meant for a cathode ray tube doubles as a storage space-- one can open the top to house other electronics, such as a DVD player or games console, or maybe hide a bottle of booze.
